Name: Phyllis Wangechi Ndiangui
Age: 22
Country of origin: Kenya
Course: Korean language
My name is Phyllis Wangechi Ndiangui, 22 years old from Kenya. I have been in Korea for almost one year, studying Korean language at the Sookmyung Women’s University’s Lingua Express in preparation of my major which is due to start in March. I have graduated from the language school with a level four and have acquired level 3 in Korean Proficiency test, TOPIK. And I owe all this all to the lovely system Sookmyung has prepared for us. Through this the teachers have taught us Korean Language with sufficiency and effectiveness.
During my time here, I have learnt a lot from Sookmyung. I really do appreciate being in Sookmyung which is one of the best Women’s University in the whole of Korea. Sookmyung Women’s University takes pride in their foreign student and go as far as appointing Korean students to help them out on campus. We call them ‘buddies’. They also offer us, the foreign students, the global lounge where all the foreign students can have help and any questions concerning the school or even the problems they face in their daily lives. The Global lounge has helped me meet and make friends too, especially when we have foreign students meeting or events.
Thanks to Sookmyung, in addition to learning more about Korean culture at the school and also at the same time experience the culture one on one, I have also met international students, which has helped me improve my knowledge about other countries and their culture. I have learnt to appreciate other people’s culture.
Sookmyung also has a free Korean class every Saturday, which is arranged by the school meant for the foreigners living in Korea as well as students of the university. This helps us practice Korean outside class and through it I was able to even to go MT, Membership Training, where we are made to experience deeper Korean culture and also to learn how to make Korean food. This creates a nice experience for foreign students and foreigners as well. I have also had the chance to go through the Korean traditional initiation into adulthood. I was given a Korean name and ushered into the world anew as a responsible woman in the society.
Sookmyung has offered me a lot of experiences and broadened my mind to a lot of things including other cultures. I believe Sookmyung is a good foundation for my life and for achieving my dreams in future.
