Case Study

Ilija Sovilj – 24 years old, from Serbia
He attended the Master Programme at ESE Florence starting in January 2012

“I think in today’s Global Economy it’s imperative to have a well-rounded education” says Ilija Sovilj, a student finishing his Master’s degree in Marketing at ESE Florence.
Sovilj completed his undergraduate career in Finance and Economics at The Department of European Economy and Business. During his undergraduate experience Sovilj realized he wanted to have a specialization, specifically in Marketing and  expressed interest to a professor who mentioned how lucrative it would be to obtain a Masters in Marketing abroad, as it would expand his opportunities and network for obtaining a career within the sector.
Obtaining a Masters in Marketing with ESE was a different experience than his Undergraduate programme in Serbia. “I found that the Marketing classes with the ESE professors offered a hands on learning experience as opposed to just studying the required course books that revolved around the subject” Another aspect that drew Solvilj to ESE were the students with whom he shared classes with. “I immediately noticed that a lot of the students had family businesses which gave me a tremendous opportunity to network and my new friends had the same entrepreneurial drive that I had.”
As Sovilj continued to excel and develop a passion for marketing, ESE’s Placement Director Tommaso Forosetti approached him with a terrific internship opportunity. ESE’s placement office works diligently in researching, selecting and establishing relationships with only the best businesses and corporations worldwide. In developing these relationships the goal is to enhance ESE students’ career experience within the specialisation they are studying.
In January 2013, Sovilj began his internship at Trim 2, a consulting firm which deals with private equities and mergers whose CEO was previously employed at Bain, the largest Global consulting firm. “The best part of working at Trim 2 is that I’m learning something new every week” says Ilija who will finish his internship in March 2013. As far as Sovilj plans for the future go, after finishing his dissertation, he has realized that although he is proud to have a strong financial skill set, his passion lies within Marketing. Sovilj would also like to serve as an ambassador to Serbia and connect his country with the rest of the world being a role model to a younger generation who might believe they cannot have a successful future.
