The latest research from the Brazilian Educational and Language Travel Association (Belta)finds that a record-high 302,000 Brazilian students went abroad in 2017. This represents a 23% increase over 2016, and overall growth of nearly 40% between 2015 and 2017. Average spend per student also increased by 12% compared to 2016.
For the third year in a row, Canada ranks as the most-popular destination among Brazilian students, followed by the US. Also of note, the UK has moved up the table of leading destinations, from fifth in 2015 and 2016 to the third-ranked choice among Brazilians in 2017. Australia and Ireland have moved down accordingly to take up the fourth and fifth positions this year.
Language courses remain the main product category for Brazilian agents but demand is shifting away from general English studies in favour of more specialised programmes, especially those tied to students’ career aspirations
Reflecting the challenging economic conditions in Brazil, demand is also heightened for programmes that combine work and study, and for destinations that permit students to work during and/or after their studies.
